The Perfect Grilled Steak Dinner

I have to admit, I am not the greatest meat lover in the family. But when it comes to a good steak, well… I’ve got a bit of a soft spot. The fact that it is so quick and easy to make is just another reason I can’t resist.

Now, I know steak has a bit of a reputation, some people think it’s tricky to get it just right. But once you give it a try and follow a few simple rules and techniques, you will become braver in the kitchen, and soon enough, you will be grilling steaks like an expert chef 🙂

Personally, I love my steak grilled on the BBQ for that smoky flavor, but if the weather is not in my favor,  a cast iron pan works just as well. But at the end of the day, my choice totally depends on my mood (and the good weather to grill outside). Either way, this recipe is quick, incredibly delicious, and I promise, it will be your go-to for steak nights.

And in my kitchen, every time steak is on the menu, my husband steps in to lend his “expert” grilling skills. It is a family affair, and that’s what makes it even more fun.

So, what do you need to make this steak dinner happen? Let’s get into the essentials.

What do you need to grill a steak?

Sirloin steak – For this recipe I used sirloin steak. I find that sirloin is flavorful and also affordable, plus it grills beautifully on the BBQ or sears perfectly in a cast-iron pan. Since the weather was amazing, we fired up the BBQ. Ultimately, the key is in the prep: no need for fancy marinades or complicated rubs here. Simply sprinkle some salt and black pepper and that is all you need for perfect seasoning and ultimate flavors.

Optional (but highly recommended) – If you’ve been following along, you know I am a big fan of keeping herb butter stocked in the fridge. This is one of those moments where it truly shines and is highly recommended. To finish off the steak, just add a thin slice of herb butter (I suggest a rosemary-based one), and you’ll elevate it to a whole new level of flavor heaven.

Digital Kitchen Thermometer – Getting a kitchen thermometer will make your life so much easier. Whether you are cooking a steak, turkey, or anything else, it really helps you hit the perfect temperature every time. I went without one for ages, but once I got it, it was a total game-changer. And the best part is that they are super affordable. Here is a brand I recommend, it works like a charm and it won’t break the bank.

Fire up the grill for a quick and easy steak, perfectly seasoned with salt, pepper, and finished with herb butter for a complete dinner meal.

Ingredients

  • Four thick slices of sirloin steak

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Butter (or rosemary-based herb butter, if you’ve got some)

Directions

  • First, take your steak out of the fridge and let it rest at room temperature for at least one to two hours before cooking. This step is essential to make sure the steak cooks evenly.
  • Next, generously sprinkle both sides of the steak with salt and black pepper. Believe it or not, that is all the seasoning needed for perfect flavor. Now it’s time to move on to grilling.
  • Preheat the grill to 400°F. Once the grill is hot, place the steak directly on it. You should hear that nice sizzle! Grill each side for about 7 to 10 minutes for a perfect medium-rare steak, or if you have a thermometer, aim for an internal temperature of 130-140°F.
  • Transfer the steak to a plate, add a thin slice of herb butter, and cover it with foil to rest for 5-10 minutes. And that's it!

How to serve the steak for a perfect dinner meal?

My absolute favorite sides to pair with a juicy steak are sweet potato fries (or oven-baked wedges), all-seasoned potato wedges, or aromatic corn cooked in a pan. And if you’re in the mood for something lighter, a fresh salad is always a fantastic choice for a complete, delicious meal.
