This week, I am all about making homemade sauces. And this one is a real must-try! I am talking about a homemade salty caramel sauce.

It is so delicious and super easy to make. With only five simple ingredients, you will get a smooth, golden, creamy sauce ready to be drizzled over cheesecake, fruit fruit, good old vanilla ice cream… or just straight from the spoon.
Once you try this homemade caramel sauce, I guarantee – there is no going back to the store-bought version.

What You’ll Need
Water and sugar – These are the base for any caramel sauce. Very simple, but essential.
Whipping cream – For creamy delicious texture, full fat cream is needed. I don’t dare replace it with anything else. I found perfection and no way I am leaving it.
Butter – For glossy texture and extra flavour. I prefer salted butter, but unsalted works too. If you want a salty caramel, just adjust the salt to your taste.
Salt – A good pinch balances the sweetness of the sugar and gives a perfect sweet and salty flavour.
Equipment
Dutch oven or small saucepan – This is where the magic happens. Just make sure it’s deep enough because the caramel bubbles up a lot while cooking. Safety first.
Whisk – A good whisk is helpful to mix everything smoothly.
Jar – A glass jar is perfect for storing your caramel sauce. I love mason jars, they are cute and practical. But if you prefer a dispenser bottle, go for it.
Spread the Sweetness
Homemade gifts are the best. They are thoughtful, personal, and made with love. I’ve always loved sharing food with family and friends, and this salty caramel sauce is perfect for that.

If you’ve seen my traditional chili oil, you know I love gifting homemade condiments. Now, imagine this little gift basket with a jar of spicy homemade oil and one jar of sweet caramel sauce, both with a cute bowl to mark the gift. It’s something that brings joy, comfort, and flavour to the meals of someone you love and care about. Who wouldn’t love that?

Ingredients
¼ cup water
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
⅔ cup of whipping cream
3 tablespoons butter
pinch of salt
Directions
- In a small, deep saucepan, heat the water and sugar over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Once sugar dissolves, increase to medium-high heat. STOP stirring (very important). When bubbling starts, keep a close eye - this is the caramelization process. It should take about 7-10 minutes.
- Let it cook until the mixture turns deep amber colour and the bubbles are quite active. Turn off the heat and set it aside.
- After about 30 seconds (once the bubbling settles) slowly pour in the whipping cream while stirring actively. It will sizzle and bubble, but that is totally normal. Just keep whisking and work carefully.
- Add butter and salt, then stir until smooth and fully combined. The sauce will get a nice creamy, glossy texture.
- And that’s it! Your golden caramel sauce is ready to be served. Let it cool, then transfer it to a jar and seal it up.
Notes
- Make sure you work very carefully as you are adding the whipping cream into the sauce. It is crucial that you let the bubbles settle (off heat) for few seconds before you start whisking the whipping cream in. It is a short process, but crucial for success and safely cooking.
How I Like to Use the Salty Caramel Sauce
One of my favourite ways to use this sauce is simply drizzled over a cheesecake. My husband loves it so much, he even requested it for his birthday. It is unbelievable how much flavour this caramel sauce adds to just about anything.
How do you feel about caramel pancakes?
You can also use the caramel drizzled over a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream. Even a basic bowl of mixed fruit gets a major upgrade with a little caramel on top. Have you tried the toasted marshmallows? They would love to be dipped into the caramel.
And of course, as a homemade gift. Pour the sauce into a jar, decorate the lid, tie a cute bow, and you get a a sweet, thoughtful gift for someone special. Let me know how yours turns out and how you love to use it. So excited!
