This golden milk recipe, or also known as turmeric latte is the perfect method for making a drink for adventitious taste buds. Whether you like it hot or cold, this spiced milk is a great comfort drink – a wonderful mix of warm flavours. Even though I refer to it as turmeric latte, note no coffee is added (therefore has no-caffeine).  So, if you are ready to try something new and nourishing, this is the drink for you!

Why You Should Try this Golden Milk recipe

Turmeric has serious anti-inflammatory and healing powers and can boost your immune system. So it is incredibly beneficial when you feel under the weather or you just want to treat your body with some extra care and love.

This is a popular drink in South Asian cultures and it is celebrated for its healing powers and rich flavours.

How to Make it

Making the turmeric latte is as easy as it gets. All you need is few simple ingredients and a small saucepan. The milk is cooked on the stovetop so nothing fancy or complicated.

To keep the milk silky smooth, it is important to have a mini strainer. After simmering, you would want to strain out the flavourful spice bits for perfect creamy texture. Now, grab your saucepan, gather your spices, and let’s turn your kitchen into a cozy café bar.

What Do You Need

Milk – My recipe is based on full fat milk, however it is equally delicious with plant-based alternatives, such as oat, almond or cashew milk. Just pick your favourite, and you are ready to go.

Turmeric – I like using ground turmeric because it is easy and convenient, however you can use finely grated fresh turmeric root if you like.

Maple syrup of honey – to sweeten the drink, some maple syrup smokiness is amazing. If you go for honey, use a little less, as it is sweeter than the syrup. Either way, you are in for a treat.

Cinnamon – the cinnamon brings everything together and marries all the sweet spices together in a wonderful symphony. I use both the ground cinnamon and cinnamon sticks during cooking to nicely infuse the milk.

Cardamom – here is my twist. I recently tried the magical powers of the cardamom and it is incredible what few crushed cardamom seeds do here.

Black pepper –  Although for some of you it may seem a bit odd: a sprinkle of black pepper will just add the perfect spiciness and balance it all out.

Equipment

Here is what simple equipment you need to make the golden milk:

Small saucepan – to cook the milk and spices together on the stovetop.

Whisk – a small whisk is essential to whisk all spices together into the milk.

Strainer – to strain any spice bits and get a nice smooth creamy texture.

Frother (optional) – To bring the drink to a whole new level, I finish the drink with a layer of golden milk foam. The foam adds a luxurious look and makes a perfect latte. I usually froth a bit of milk with a pinch of turmeric powder. If you do not have a frother – no worries. Foamless drinks are equally delicious and special.

Notes

  • It is so simple to convert to a vegan drink - simply replace the milk with plant-based alternative, such as oat, almond or cashew milk.
  • If you are opting in for honey, make sure you reduce the amount, as the honey is sweeter than the maple syrup.

How to store

While you can store the golden milk in the fridge for 2-3 days, I really like this drink warm and when is freshly prepared. Considering it takes only 5-10 minutes to prepare, make it fresh when those cravings hit.
