The Best Homemade Granola

I have a confession to make –  I no longer buy granola. Not even once in a while.

You may wonder – why not? Well, because I know how to make granola at home. I make it exactly how I want it, with the ingredients I love, whenever I feel like it, and I make as much as I need. That’s it. Easy, simple, and absolutely delicious.

Now, to be honest, at first I hesitated. For some reason, I thought making granola at home was complicated. I thought I needed fancy ingredients or a secret technique to toast everything to perfection. But, it turns out, homemade granola is probably the easiest thing I’ve ever made.

It is so good, that I’ve caught my husband sneaking handfuls straight from the jar more than once.

Not even with milk or yogurt, just a handful of granola as a snack with a big grin on his face. It’s that good.

Now, let me show you how easy it is to make it, following my easy granola recipe.

What You’ll Need

Oats – I go with rolled oats. I like them as they are hearty, full of fiber, and are the base for the granola.

Pumpkin seeds – These are my favourite crunchy toppings. Toasted pumpkin seeds add the perfect crunch and loads of nutrients.

Dried cranberries – A little tang to balance the sweetness. You can totally substitute them for chopped dates or dried apricots, but I’m team cranberry for that zing.

Sliced almonds – These are my favourite nutty option. They toast up so beautifully. Feel free to add extra nuts (walnuts, pecans), or even going nut-free (in case of allergies).

Brown sugar, maple syrup or honey – Just a touch to sweeten and bind. When the sugar melts, it turns into a golden glue that holds everything together and adds big flavour. I highly recommend to use honey or maple syrup, because their liquid texture will easily marry everything together.

Spices – I usually sprinkle some cinnamon for extra warmth, but this part is totally up to you.

Pinch of salt – Just a pinch will balance the flavours so well.

Coconut oil – My personal favourite for a mild, toasty touch. You can use butter instead, but I like the coconut oil as it adds a special tropical flavour.

Optional add-ins – I often add toasted coconut or mini chocolate chips for extra fun.

Equipment you need

Non-stick baking sheet – This is one of the must-have kitchen tools. Get yourself a good one to serve you for years. Line it with parchment paper and you are ready to go.

Notes

  • Make sure that granola is completely cool before collecting it in a jar, otherwise it will get soggy rather than crispy. And the whole beauty is in that perfect crunchiness, right?

How I Use Granola

My favorite way to use the granola is on top of yogurt, especially for breakfast. I usually add a spoon of chia seeds, maybe some hemp seeds, and then sprinkle a generous layer of granola on top. It is an instant and nutritious meal.

I also like it  sprinkled over smoothie bowls, on top of baked fruit, or even just by the handful when I need a snack.

Also, meet your new favourite ice cream topping! This granola is so delicious and crunchy, making a simple scoop of vanilla ice-cream – a dream.

How to Store It

Simply transfer the granola into a sealed mason jar and leave it on the counter for up to a week.
If you want it to last longer, just stick it in the fridge and it’ll stay fresh for another week.

I recommend starting with a single batch first, and if you think you’ll need more, just double or triple it  in no time.
