Get ready, folks for the most delicious stovetop popcorn recipe ever! Every time we go to the movie theater, I think, “Next time, I’ve got to make a healthier version of this butter popcorn at home!” And guess what? After years of saying this to myself, I finally did it! I was inspired by a chef’s recipe, and I created my own spicier version of stovetop popcorn with butter and cheese that is even kid-approved (with proper adjustments).
Whether it is a movie night, date night, or party time, this homemade popcorn recipe is here to make your night extra special. Let’s dive in!
What is popcorn
Okay, you may say “Who even asks this question?” But just in case, if you are curious: popcorn is simply corn kernels that puff up when heated. The popcorn even on its own, it is such a healthy and delicious fun snack. But if you want to go one level up – sure you can! Simply add butter, cheese, spices, or even sweet toppings for dessert-like options, and you have a snack to suit any mood or craving.
I always aim to make this snack as healthy as possible, but still keep it delicious and exciting.
We have enough food we aim to avoid, so I think even this one looks highly … fatty, with a bit of control over how much we use on butter and cheese – we can enjoy it completely guilt-free.
Why Everyone Should Learn How to Make a Stovetop Popcorn
Very simple – the stovetop homemade popcorn is budget-friendly, easy to make, and gives you total control over the ingredients and flavours. You can decide how much butter, cheese, and seasoning to use. Plus, it tastes so good that you’ll soon prefer this homemade version over the store-bought or microwave popcorn. Trust me, it’s not as tricky as you might think – so give it a try!
The key to success is to use the right temperature, shake the pot often to avoid burning, and give your kernels plenty of space to pop and dance around.
What You Need to Make Stovetop Popcorn with Butter and Cheese
Here is the short shopping list and equipment you need:
Popcorn kernels: Look for non-GMO options if possible; I like to buy mine in bulk based on how much I need.
Light olive oil: Perfect for smooth air popping.
Salt: I use light pink Himalayan salt to season.
Butter: Unsalted is the best, because you can adjust the salt to taste later.
Cheese mix: A blend of grated Parmesan and cheddar is my favourite combo. The cheddar adds a smoky flavour and a beautiful yellow color, while the Parmesan brings that lovely cheesy tanginess. Feel free to experiment with other cheeses and let me know how it turns out!
Chilli flakes: Optional, but they add a nice spicy kick. Skip them if you’re making this for kids.
Large heavy pot: A Dutch oven works great. I use it for almost everything I cook in my home! It has even heat distribution and a tight lid – which is what you need for ideal stovetop popcorn. If you want to learn about the main benefits of having a Dutch oven and how to choose the perfect one for you, take some time to read my related blog posts. Large deep bowl: For mixing and seasoning the popcorn evenly. Plus you can use the same bowl for serving and sharing the popcorn with your dear ones. Now turn that movie on!
How to Serve
Serve this delicious homemade popcorn in a big bowl or divide it into smaller bowls or bags for individual servings. I like to use paper bags, it is easy to clean up and looks rustic and convenient. Plus, the same paper bags can be used for storing leftovers (I highly doubt there will be any left).
Leftovers?
If you do have leftovers, keep them in a paper bag for up to a day. But honestly, I doubt you will have any leftovers, this popcorn is that good!

Ingredients
- For the popcorn
½ cup popcorn kernels
1-2 tablespoons light olive oil
- For the seasoning
½ cup grated cheddar and Parmesan cheese mix
2 tablespoons melted butter
Salt, to taste
Chilli flakes, to taste
Directions
- Place your Dutch oven or heavy pot on medium heat and warm up the olive oil. Once the oil is hot, pour in the popcorn kernels and cover the pot tightly with the lid. Trapping the hot air inside will aid the popping of the popcorn and will prevent some wilder ones from escaping out of it.
- Shake the pot frequently to prevent burning and ensure even popping. You will soon start hearing those delightful pops. So satisfying!
- When the popping slows down (after about 5 minutes), remove the pot from heat. Wait 3-4 minutes with the lid slightly open to let the hot air escape.
- Transfer the popcorn to a large bowl. Sprinkle it with salt, drizzle with the melted butter over the top. Add the grated cheese mix and chilli flakes, and gently toss everything together.
Notes
- When you season and mix the popcorn, skip the spatula and toss the popcorn by shaking the large bowl. It is fun and will mix it all well together.
