Wonton soup used to scare me a little. It looked like one of those dishes you order at a restaurant because making it at home felt too much.
But then I tried it once on a busy night and it turned out to be one of the easiest soups ever.
So today I am sharing my easy wonton soup – quick, comforting, healthy, and made in about 15 minutes.
Perfect for those evenings when you want something warm and tasty without spending hours in the kitchen.
So follow me to teach you how to make wonton soup.
What Is Wonton Soup
Wonton soup is a simple Asian soup made with flavourful broth and savory dumplings called wontons. They are made of thin dough filled with meat and veggies, although you can find vegetarian options too.
You can absolutely make your own wontons, but using frozen ones makes life so much easier. And trust me, the soup still tastes amazing.
This recipe is flexible, easy to adjust, and works with whatever veggies you have on hand. Want it spicy? Add more spice. Want it more filling? Add noodles. It’s that easy.
Why This Quick Soup Works
This soup just fits into real life on those nights when everyone is hungry and you are trying to figure out what to make, this recipe steps in and saves the day. You can literally have dinner on the table in about 15 minutes.
It is also one of those recipes you can shape however you like. Adjust how much veggies you want, or make it spicier – go for it!
And it works no matter what kind of wontons you choose: chicken, pork, veggie, or whatever you already have in the freezer.
This is why I love it for busy weeknights – easy, delicious, and done in minutes.

Can You Make It Ahead?
If you want to get ahead, you can make the broth in advance. Keep it in the fridge, and when you are ready to eat, warm it up and drop in the wontons. They cook so fast that it still feels like a freshly made soup, even though you did part of the work earlier. Perfect for busy days.
What You’ll Need To Make Healthy Wonton Soup
Frozen wontons – You can find them in almost every freezer aisle, and there are so many flavours to choose from: chicken, veggie, pork, even shrimp. Choose your favourite.
Red curry paste – I always keep a jar in my fridge because it instantly adds flavour without extra work. Perfect for busy nights.
Fresh garlic and ginger – These two brighten up the soup right away. They will add that freshly kick and wonderful smell. I grate the ginger with a microplane for a fine texture.
Soy sauce – This gives your broth its salty, savory base.
Vegetables – Green onions and Bok Choy are my favourite veggies to add. They cook quickly, add colour, and make the soup feel more filling without much effort. You can use other veggies too, whatever you have already works fine.
Broth – Chicken or vegetable broth both work great. If you only have water, do not worry. Just double the seasonings or spices to build flavour.
Homemade chili oil – This gives the soup a smoky hint that makes everything pop. If you do not have chili oil, use olive or avocado oil and the soup will still be delicious. But if you try homemade chili oil once, you may not go back.
Dutch oven – My number one for one-pot meals. It heats evenly, keeps the broth warm, and makes cleanup easy. If you do not own one, it is worth adding to your kitchen. Want to learn more why? I have something to help you.

Ingredients
1 pound frozen chicken wontons
2 tablespoons red curry paste
3 tablespoons soy sauce
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon grated ginger
3-4 green onions, finely chopped
4 cups chicken broth
3 tablespoons homemade chili oil
5-6 Bok Choy
Optional: a splash of coconut cream
How to Make Healthy Wonton Soup
- Wash and dry the Bok Choy.
- Chop the green onions, mince the garlic, and grate the ginger.
- Add the green onions, garlic, ginger, and red curry paste to a deep, heatproof bowl.
- Heat the chili oil in a small saucepan until it is hot and lightly bubbling.
- Carefully pour the hot oil over the bowl. It will sizzle, totally normal and part of the trick.
- Warm the broth in your Dutch oven until it reaches a gentle boil, then reduce the heat.
- Add the chili-veggie mixture into the broth and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- If you want a creamier soup, stir in ¼ cup coconut cream here.
- Add the Bok Choy and frozen wontons. Let them cook for 3-4 minutes.
- Serve warm and top with chopped peanuts or a little Sriracha.
Notes
- You can opt in for green curry paste if you want, totally up to you. It would be equally delicious.
How to Serve
You can serve this healthy wonton soup soup just as it is – warm and flavourful, on its own. If you want a bigger bowl or need to stretch it a bit, add cooked rice noodles. They blend right in and make it extra filling.
How to Store Leftovers
Store only the broth for 2-3 days in the fridge. Wontons do not store well in liquid because they get mushy, so cook only the amount you plan to eat.
When you are ready for another bowl, warm up the broth, add frozen wontons, and in few minutes you have a fresh, hot soup again.
