WhyThis Easy Apple Crumble Pie Recipe Is The Best
This one takes all the secrets of grandma’s perfect pie and makes the whole thing easier, lighter, and more flexible for busy life. You can swap the spices, adjust the texture, and even make it ahead of time so dessert is ready whenever you need it. It tastes amazing on its own but also loves a bit of extra flair like ice cream, caramelized apples, or cinnamon sugar.
What You’ll Need
Apples – Use what you have: Granny Smith, Ambrosia, Gala… anything works. Wash, peel, and cut or shred depending on the texture you like in your apple crumble pie.
Butter – Traditionally this recipe used pork lard (I know, sounds wild), but I go with unsalted butter to keep it simple and friendly for everyone. It still gives you that beautiful flakey crust.
Sugar – Light brown sugar or white sugar both work here to sweeten things up.
Eggs – You’ll need to separate them for this apple pie with crumble topping recipe. Yolks for the crust, whites for the filling.
Flour – All purpose flour is needed to bring the crust together.
Baking powder and salt – Just enough to help everything bake beautifully.
Shredded almonds – These add a sweet, crunchy top that gets golden and delicious.
Vanilla extract – Adds warm cozy flavour you never want to skip.
Maple syrup – My favourite natural sweetener to replace white sugar in the filling.
Cinnamon – What’s apple without the cinnamon, right?
Walnuts – To add a fun crunch. Chop them up a bit for best results.
Lemon zest – It brightens everything and keeps the filling from feeling too heavy.
Baking pan – Any good baking pan works or go with your Dutch oven if you want a rustic look. It bakes pies perfectly.
Mixer – Hand mixer or stand mixer. Whatever you’ve got will do the trick.
Now let me show you how to make apple crumble pie – it is easier than you think!

hourLearn how to make apple crumble pie with this easy apple crumble pie recipe. Warm apples, buttery crust, and the best golden crumble on top.
Ingredients
- For the crust
200 grams unsalted butter, room temperature
½ cup sugar
3 egg yolks
2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ cup shredded almonds for topping
pinch of salt
- For the apple crumble pie filling
3 to 4 apples
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 egg whites
2 teaspoons maple syrup
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon cornstarch
zest of one lemon
Pinch of salt
How to Make Apple Crumble Pie
- Prepare the crust
- Take the eggs and butter out at least an hour before you start. This helps everything mix smoothly and gives you that perfect soft cookie crust.
- Beat the butter with a mixer on medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes until fluffy.
- Add half the sugar and mix again. Add the remaining sugar and keep mixing for another minute.
- Add the egg yolks one by one. Continue until everything is incorporated well.
- In a separate bowl mix the flour, salt, and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients into the butter mixture and use a spatula to fold everything into a smooth dough.
- Split the dough in half. Wrap one half with a plastic foil and place it in the fridge.
- Take the other half and press it evenly into the bottom of your baking pan.
- Prepare the filling
- Peel and chop or shred the apples. Traditional apple crumble pie uses shredded apples, but either is great.
- Add the maple syrup and vanilla and mix.
- Sprinkle in the cinnamon and salt.
- Sprinkle the cornstarch to help absorb the extra juices, so the filling doesn't get too watery.
- Beat the egg whites on medium-high speed until fluffy.
- Add the lemon zest. I usually use microplane to shred the zest.
- Next, add the chopped walnuts into the egg whites and fold gently with a spatula. Don't over mix as it will flatten. You need fluffy texture.
- Assemble the pie
- Preheat the oven to 380 F.
- Spread the apple filling on top of the crust.
- Spread the fluffy egg white mixture over the apples.
- Take the chilled dough from the fridge and shred it right over the top of the filling. If some pieces clump together, just break them gently with your fingers.
- Sprinkle the shredded almonds on the top.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until the top is beautifully golden. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn.
- Let the pie cool completely. Dust with powdered white sugar or cinnamon sugar. Cut slices and enjoy.
Notes
- You can opt in for other toppings if you like, like toasted coconut, oats or go without toppings. It will be equally delicious.
How to Serve Your Apple Crumble Pie
I love serving it simple with a little powdered sugar. But if you want something extra, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of caramelized apples. Now it’s get fancy, right?
How to Store It
Keep it covered at room temperature for a day or two. For longer storage, place slices in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days. II don’t recommend freezing this apple crumble pie because apples release too much liquid and the texture won’t be the same.
