The Best Sweet and Spicy Sauce

The best sweet and spicy sauce of all times! For years, I wanted to nail the ultimate sweet and spicy sauce recipe (homemade, of course). Well, guess what? That day has arrived, and I’m thrilled to finally share it with you.

Back in my teenage years, I was all about spicy food – seriously!  I used to put hot sauce on just about anything. But my stomach wasn’t a huge fan of the loads of the preservatives in the bought sauces. So, I started hunting for a better, homemade option. And maybe it took me years – but here we are at that perfect moment.

In my hometown, there was this small Chinese restaurant that sold the perfect signature sweet and spicy sauce. I would order sticky rice, drizzle this perfect sauce on top, and savor every bite like it was my last meal. I knew it had to be simple to make, and I vowed one day I will crack that code.

Well, that day is here! This simple recipe isn’t just inspired by that unforgettable sauce of my childhood, but it is even better because it is made with dedication and so much love. The best part is that there are no weird ingredients and you can absolutely control both spiciness, sweetness and salt. Get ready to drizzle it on everything, and don’t be surprised if you start eating it straight from the base. No judgment, as I’ve been there many times.

Why Is This Sauce Amazing

First off, it is so easy to make. You only need a handful of ingredients, nothing fancy –  just stuff you can easily grab at any store. The preparation itself is incredibly easy – simply whisk everything together and cook until sauce is reduced.

This sauce is perfect for making spicy chicken wings, drizzled over a stir fried dish, or simply mixed into rice or noodles. Honestly, it’s one of those sauces you will put on everything!

Sriracha sauce Sriracha is the base for this  sauce. I am a huge fan of this Vietnamese gem and we use it regularly in my home. Although you can replace it with other hot sauce, such as Frank’s Hot Sauce, the Sriracha has the perfect texture, so I strongly recommend sticking with simple Sriracha.

Honey – Sweet, sticky, and absolutely irreplaceable, the honey brings that perfect balance to the heat and makes everything come together beautifully. Also its stickiness and natural sweetness is perfect and nothing can replace the honey here.

Soy sauce – I usually go for Tamari, but whatever soy sauce you have works like a charm to add the perfect saltiness.

Garlic – A single minced clove is all you need to add the perfect aroma and kick into the sauce. Just a small clove will  do wonders.

Butter – The butter will enhance all flavours and finish with perfect glossiness.

Notes

  • You can swap the Sriracha sauce with other hot sauce such as Frank's hot sauce, BUT for best results, and desired sticky texture, please stick with the recommended ingredients as outlined in my recipe.

How to Serve

While I have a slightly different base for my sweet and spicy meatballs, rolling them in this sauce makes them taste like heaven. The sauce is also amazing drizzled over stir-fried rice and veggies, or as the perfect finishing touch for chicken wings or ribs. But honestly, the possibilities are endless for the sauce.
